Dr. Dennis D. Cantu Health Science Magnet School is located at 2002 San Bernardo in Laredo, TX within Laredo’s oldest and most loved high school, Martin High School. The doors to this learning institution opened August 1999. It was the LISD Board Members’ vision, inspiration and determination that started the construction of this magnet school. They envisioned a place where students, interested in the health science field, could be provided an advance specialized curriculum, with hands-on, real life experiences to help them understand and embrace their chosen field. On April 21, 2004, the school was dedicated and named after Dr. Dennis D. Cantu, a local physician, who is a great advocate for education and LISD students and who had served many years as LISD Board member. He was elected trustee to the LISD School Board in 1990, where he served as secretary, vice president, and was elected to unprecedented four terms as President of the Board. Dr. Dennis D. Cantu continues his invaluable support to the magnet program.
Since its beginning, this magnet program offers standard college, advanced academic courses, specialized training in health science, the opportunity for vocational training and certification, and early enrollment/dual credit college opportunities. This school is uniquely designed to help students understand the concepts and skills associated with the health sciences and to increase students’ awareness of health-related careers.
